Cowboy Films is an independent production company making features films, documentaries and television drama.
Cowboy Films was established in 1986 by Lisa Bryer to produce music promos with director Tim Pope, making ground breaking videos for artists such as David Bowie, The Cure, Soft Cell and Iggy Pop. As Cowboy grew to become one of the leading TV commercial production companies in the 90’s and home to some of the UK’s leading creative talent, the company expanded into narrative storytelling.
Charles Steel joined Cowboy in 2001. The company produced a number of award winning short films such as WASP, which won the Academy Award, and features including GOODBYE CHARLIE BRIGHT and THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND for which Lisa and Charles won a BAFTA.
When Lisa stepped back to a non-executive role in 2007, Charles took over the management and has continued with the company since.
Charles Steel
Producer
Charles started his film career as a runner, working his way up the production ladder before deciding to train at the Royal College of Art, where he graduated with a MA in Film Producing.
Setting up as an independent producer he made a number of short films before producing his first feature AMY FOSTER for Columbia Tri-Star.
In 2001 Charles joined Lisa at Cowboy Films, producing the feature film THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, for which he won a BAFTA. Since then Charles has produced a number of award winning feature films, documentaries and TV series, most recently winning a second BAFTA for Best Drama Series with the Netflix show TOP BOY.
Alasdair Flind
Producer
Alasdair, a former journalist, has a background in film development and script editing and set up Prospect Entertainment to develop his own projects before joining Cowboy as Charles’ producing partner in 2007. Alasdair has gone on to produce a number of tv & film projects, most recently winning the BAFTA for the final season of TOP BOY.
David Harwood
Associate Producer
David joined Cowboy in 2012 having worked freelance in the production office of the original series of Top Boy. He most recently worked on all 3 Netflix seasons of Top Boy as associate producer. David has also produced short films that have screened at festivals including Encounters Film Festival, Underwire and London Short Film Festival.
Harry Langham
Development Executive
Harry joined Cowboy Films in 2023, having previously worked as a script reader for Film4. He begun his career in the film industry at the British Independent Film Awards, after graduating from the University of Oxford with a Master’s in English.
